Clean Eating is everywhere these days – Especially used as an Instagram hashtag and on other Social Media.
WHAT IS CLEAN EATING
At its simplest, clean eating is about eating whole foods, or “real” foods — those that are un- or minimally processed, refined, and handled, making them as close to their natural form as possible. It doesn’t mean however that you can never have processed food, or only ear raw, uncooked food or that you have to become a vegan.
Touted as the next big thing a couple of years ago, the tables have turned a little bit and you will read quite a few articles as to why clean eating is essential the worst/ bad for you.
There’s extremes to clean eating and it can become an unhealthy obsession for some. At the extreme end of it you will see people struggling with body image etc who don’t ever allow themselves to deviate from clean eating.
I don’t think however that we should malign cleaner eating because of this. Eating mainly minimally processed foods most of the time and avoiding highly processed food can have positive effects on health, especially in regards to the digestive sytem, symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and reducing inflammatory conditions in the body.
Don’t be mistaken however, clean eating still isn’t a guarantee to lose weight. The only way to lose weight is to be in a calorie deficit. Clean foods like nuts, nut butters and avocados for example can be quite calorific. You can quite easily have switched to clean eating and not be able to lose bodyfat/weight.
